Happiness after obstacles

For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one. Happiness is a journey, not a destination.

I know I’ve spent a lot of time waiting for that perfect moment, that perfect condition, that perfection which seems to be just on the other side of some condition or another. I’ve been very creative at making up various conditions, which turned out to be simply barriers to happiness.

Waiting until everything is clear may mean a very long wait.

I suppose I still do that, but less and less often, and I’m happier.

  1. I believe this is a universal issue for we humans Vincent. In Buddhism it’s referred to as ‘becoming’, though there is no finality and it’s more a case of a constant grasping towards an imagined state – then another, then another. Whilst this may sound rather more active than ‘waiting’, it is not. All of our ‘waiting’ – in the sense that you mean – is loaded with expectancy as you rightly suggest, and it is that expectant, anticipatory mind that is subtly grasping at a becoming.

  2. If you wait to do everything until you’re sure it’s right, you’ll probably never do much of anything ~ Win Borden

We get caught up wanting to reach the destination. The sweetest in any journey?? – is the journey itself. Regardless whether it goes wonky or not. It is what makes life come to life. =)
